Julian Warhurst

Julian Warhurst is a multidisciplinary engineer, entrepreneur, and technology leader with extensive experience developing complex automation and robotic systems. His career has spanned industrial robotics, pharmaceutical automation, automated storage, refrigeration, and large-scale retail automation.

Julian studied Industrial Engineering and Computer Science at Northeastern University, establishing a multidisciplinary foundation that would become a defining characteristic of his career.

He began his career as an applications engineer, installing and commissioning robotic systems and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) for automotive assembly lines. This early experience provided a practical understanding of industrial automation and the challenges involved in creating robust solutions for real-world production environments.

Julian later worked for Harvard Apparatus, Zymark and subsequently Unisyn, where he developed laboratory robotics and automation systems for pharmaceutical applications. His work combined mechanical design, controls, software, and instrumentation to automate laboratory processes, drug testing and cell culture.

In 1998, Julian co-founded TekCel, a pharmaceutical automation startup specializing in automated low-temperature sample storage. Under his engineering guidance, TekCel developed robotic systems designed to reliably store and retrieve biological and pharmaceutical samples in challenging low-temperature environments. TekCel was subsequently acquired by Hamilton Robotics, a global provider of laboratory automation technologies.

Julian later joined Alert Innovation, where he played a pivotal role in the development and testing of advanced automated grocery fulfillment systems for Walmart. These systems combined robotics, material handling, controls, software, and large-scale system integration to address the demanding requirements of automated grocery order fulfillment. With Julian’s leadership, Alert met the stringent environmental and cost requirement of Walmart and Walmart acquired Alert in 2023.

Throughout his career, Julian has maintained a highly hands-on and multidisciplinary approach to engineering. He is equally comfortable working with mechanical systems, electrical and control systems, refrigeration, robotics, and software, and particularly enjoys engineering challenges that do not fit neatly within a single discipline.

His approach to product development combines practical engineering judgment with rapid experimentation and rigorous testing. Whether troubleshooting a mechanical system, circuit design, or working through software and controls challenges, Julian focuses on understanding the complete system and turning innovative concepts into practical, reliable products.
